MEDIA 8 ENTERTAINMENT’S “MONSTER” WINS GOLDEN GLOBE AWARD

Media 8 Entertainment announced today that Charlize Theron, star of its film “Monster,” won the Golden Globe award last night for “Best Actress – Drama.”

Accepting the award in front of a star-studded crowd, Ms. Theron received a standing ovation and appeared elated by her victory. Ms. Theron effusively thanked the filmmakers and producers for their dedication to the project, and for their steadfast support of her in taking on such a daring role. The Golden Globes are awarded by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a renowned organization made up of a select group of international film journalists. The Golden Globes are traditionally seen as one of the strongest indicators of Academy Awards consideration, and the Golden Globe is considered one of the film industry’s most prestigious and coveted awards.

"Charlize’s victory is a tribute to her incredible breakthrough performance and to the excellence of MDP’s team of production executives,” stated Sammy Lee, Vice Chairman of the Board. "This award recognition and the continuing critical and box office success of ‘Monster’ underscores our company’s new commitment to producing films that are both critically prestigious and commercially successful. And this win would not have been possible without the tremendous work that Bob Berney and Newmarket Films have done in releasing and promoting the film theatrically," further added Lee.
"This highly prestigious Golden Globe win is a strong testament to the brave portrayal Charlize gives in ‘Monster,’" stated David Gaynes, Sr. V.P. of Marketing & Publicity. “All of us here are tremendously proud of Charlize and thrilled with all the critical and now commercial acclaim she is continuing to receive for her powerful and courageous performance,"” added Gaynes.
The Golden Globe win further solidifies Ms. Theron’s status as an Academy Award front-runner, coming just two days ahead of the Oscar nominations, which will be announced on January 27th. Ms. Theron has already received many other awards for her performance in “Monster.” Most recently, Ms. Theron won the Best Actress award from the Chicago Film Critics, received a nomination for “Best Actress” from the Screen Actors Guild, and won the “Best Actress” award from the Broadcast Film Critics Association. In addition, Ms. Theron has won the award for “Breakthrough Performance – Actress” from the National Board of Review, and “Best Actress” honors from the San Francisco Film Critics Circle, the National Society of Film Critics, the Southeastern Film Critics, the New York Film Critics Online, the Las Vegas Film Critics, the Dallas/ Fort Worth Film Critics, and the CNN Radio Movie Awards. “Monster” is also nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, and “Monster” has landed on many Top Ten lists, including being named the “#1 Movie of the Year” by nationally syndicated film critic Roger Ebert.

“Monster” continues to perform impressively at the North American box office, and the Golden Globe win should spur even greater audience interest in the film. “Monster” is being released theatrically in the United States by Newmarket Films, and expanded to approximately 300 locations this past weekend. In the first five weekends of US release, “Monster” has ranked as one of the top movies per screen.
