MEDIA 8 ENTERTAINMENT’S “MONSTER RECEIVES PRESTIGIOUS GOLDEN GLOBE NOMINATION

Media 8 Entertainment was notified earlier today that its feature film “Monster” has received a nomination for one of Hollywood’s most prestigious awards, the Golden Globes. The Golden Globes are awarded by the members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, a body which is a made up of a select group of international film journalists. The Golden Globe nomination comes in the category of “Best Actress - Drama” for Charlize Theron’s powerful starring performance. This highly esteemed nomination marks an extremely important milestone in the initial awards season, as Golden Globe selections are traditionally considered one of the best indicators for Academy Awards nominations, and as such can influence Academy choices.

“’Monster’ is already generating tremendous buzz as one of this year’s must-see films,” said company spokesperson David Gaynes. “The Golden Globes are considered one of the most highly regarded and closely watched award races, and nominations generally serve to bring ongoing attention to the film and generate strong interest among the movie-going public. This increased visibility may serve to heighten the film’s commercial success at the box office,” Gaynes further stated.

This nomination adds to the growing list of nominations and awards Theron and “Monster” have recently begun to receive. As previously announced, leading US film critic Roger Ebert, on the nationally syndicated television show ‘Ebert & Roeper,’ called Theron’s performance “one of the best in the history of the cinema.” Said Ebert of the film, “If this movie doesn’t win the Oscar, they might as well retire the award, because this is the performance of the year.” Theron has also won the San Francisco Film Critics Circle award and the Southeastern Film Critics’ award for “Best Actress,” and the National Board of Review’s “Breakthrough Performance by an Actress" Award.” In addition, the Broadcast Film Critics Association has nominated Theron in the category of “Best Actress” for their year-end Critics Choice Awards, while “Monster” has also garnered three IFP Independent Spirit Award nominations in the categories of “Best Actress” (Theron) and “Best First Feature Film” and “Best First Screenplay.” “Monster” was also named one of the “Top Ten Films of 2003” by the American Film Institute.

Theron stars as real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the harrowing and compelling “Monster,” which was written and directed by Patty Jenkins, and co-stars Christina Ricci and Bruce Dern. It will be released in the United States through Newmarket Films on December 24th in New York and December 26th in Los Angeles, and will have a widely expanded theatrical release throughout the U.S. over the weeks following.
